Malcolm Gladwell was born September 1, 1963, in the United Kingdom, and lived with his father, a Civil Engineering Professor at the University of Waterloo, and his mother, Jamaican-born psychotherapist. Though born in the United Kingdom, he was raised in Elmira, Ontario. Gladwell has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1996, and this year received the American Sociological Association’s first Award for Excellence in Reporting Social Issues.
Gladwell’s works, The Tipping Point: How Little Things Make a Big Difference and Blink, were both New York Times #1 Best Sellers and Time magazine named him one of its 100 Most Influential People. Gladwell’s books are thoughtful, gripping and unexpected, dealing mostly in the fields of social sciences, sociology, psychology, and social psychology. In his first book, The Tipping Point, Malcolm addresses change, in particular, the understanding of what change means and why it happens as quickly and unexpectedly as it does. Blink, his second book, unravels how the human subconscious interprets situations and circumstances in the two seconds after one is exposed them, and how a person’s past experiences allow them to make informed decisions in the blink of an eye.
